July

  Sunrise: 1st July – 6h.15m.
Sunset: 1st July – 21h.05m.
Full moon: 5th July

VEGETABLE PLOTS: Seed water cress, lettuce, purslane, carrots, runner beans, bush beans, leaf cabbage (galega), head forming cabbage (repolho), brussels sprouts, sprouting turnip (grelos). Can start to eat aubergine, carrots, cabbage, spinach, beans, tomatoes, end of month peppers, celery and first melons. Harvest chick peas, beets, garlic and onions. Weed and mulch plots. Water/irrigate in mornings or evenings if possible.

FIELDS: Finish potato harvest and put aside some good medium size ones to seed next year if not buying seed potatoes, (can generally only keep your own seed potatoes going for approximately two years).

Irrigate maize. Cut and thresh cereals.

VINEYARDS/ TREES/ PRUNING/ GRAFTING: Can pick first plums — through to September. Figs will ripen end of the month through to September. Plant kiwis in a place where they can climb, (if you don’t buy the modern type make sure you have one male plant for every 2 to 3 females).

REMARKS: It is often a good idea to shade any young plants transplanted in direct sun light over the summer months with a bit of scrub or bush, simply break off a little branch and stick it in the earth next to the plant until established.

If not already done continue to cut scrub and bush.

Best time to get sheep and goats pregnant — July to September. Make sure to have gradually stopped milking two months before kidding/lambing.
